“You are not suggesting - you are not saying this to me because –”

“I am asking you to be brave and adventurous,” the Marquis said quietly, “and to travel with me to Italy just while I complete my negotiations with the Italian.”

He paused and then went on,

“It should not take more than three weeks, perhaps less and I am prepared to pay you one thousand pounds for helping me out of a very difficult dilemma.”

Lola gasped.

It had flashed instantly through her mind, when she had thought incredulously that the Marquis was asking her to go with him, that she must refuse.

It was something that both her father and mother would disapprove of.

But one thousand pounds!

She could hardly believe that she had heard right.

Then she knew at once that, if she had one thousand pounds, there would be no need for her ever go to live whit her Uncle Arthur.

She would be able to pay for a chaperone and she could then go back to her adored Meadow Cottage when she had finished her work at Queens Hoo.

And she would not have any worries over money for a very long time.

“I cannot tell just you how grateful I would be,” the Marquis was saying, “if you will do this. Although it is a long way to travel, I think you will find it enjoyable and we will do it in the most comfortable way possible.”

There was silence for a moment and then Lola said,

“Did you really say that you would give me one thousand pounds?”

“It is a small way to express my gratitude for what you would be doing for me.”

As he spoke, he rose from the stool.

“You don't have to decide at once,” he said, “I have only just returned from Germany and I want to stay here and relax a little. But then I cannot wait too long.”

He walked towards the door and, when he reached it, he hesitated for a moment and turned back.

“By the way, Miss Fenton, while you are thinking about it, I suggest that you ride tomorrow morning before breakfast with my friend and myself. You can choose any horse you like from my stables.”

He did not wait for her reply, but opened the door and went out onto the landing.

He was intelligent enough to guess that what he had offered her for tomorrow morning was even more tempting than the one thousand pounds that she obviously needed.

‘Camilo was right,’ he thought, ‘it would be a great mistake for me to be involved with some Italian girl whom I have no intention of marrying and at least that problem will not occur where Miss Fenton is concerned.’

He reflected as he walked down the stairs that he would have to be astute and make sure that the staff did not realise why he was taking her away.

However, it should not be beyond his imagination to concoct a story that she had to go away for a few weeks, perhaps to look after a sick relative before she returned to finish the curtains.
